June is National Cancer Survivors Month, a time to honor the millions of people living after cancer. Today, there are more than 18.5 million cancer survivors in the U.S. That number is expected to grow to 20 million by 2040.
During a recent expert panel hosted by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, leading clinicians addressed the critical components of survivorship, including the roles of nutrition, exercise, and education in improving long-term outcomes.
The panel was chaired by Dr. Laurie J. Kirstein and Dr. Daniel J. Boffa. Dr. Kirstein works at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and is the chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Dr. Boffa, a thoracic surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital, who also works with the Commission on Cancer.
As a participant in the panel discussion, I had the opportunity to ask a question on behalf of HealthOdysseyHub
What evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle strategies have shown promise to improve the long-term outcomes for these patients, and how can we educate the survivors and caregivers about these kinds of options?
Expert Views
Dr. Kirstein responded by highlighting that many lifestyle strategies beneficial to cancer survivors are similar to those recommended for overall health and longevity.
“Research has really shown that a healthy diet and exercise help improve survivorship for a number of cancers, just as they do for anyone looking to maintain good health.” – Dr. Kirstein
She highlighted the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per week, highlighting that even regular walking counts. Dietary guidance varies by cancer type.
- High-fiber diets are especially beneficial for colon cancer survivors.
- Limiting alcohol is crucial for breast cancer survivors.
- Low-fat diets can help lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation.

The Role of Support Systems
Dr. Kirstein added that sustaining healthy habits can be challenging for anyone, especially cancer survivors who may be dealing with fatigue, emotional distress, or lingering side effects from treatment.
To overcome these barriers, supportive programs play a vital role. She encouraged survivors and caregivers to seek out hospitals accredited by the Commission on Cancer, which ensures access to nutrition counseling, physical therapy, and lifestyle education programs.
“Organizations like the American Physical Therapy Association and nutrition-focused associations offer evidence-based recommendations and patient handouts,” she added. “Commission-accredited hospitals are expected to provide these resources.”
Advances in Cancer Treatment
Talking about the advances in cancer treatment, Dr. Boffa shared a success story in lung cancer treatment. He highlighted the significant improvement in cure rates for stage four lung cancer due to immunotherapy. Additionally, he explained the effect of small research discoveries leading to breakthroughs in cancer treatment.
Dr. Boffa also added about the importance of emotional support and being present for cancer survivors.
Survivorship Means Living Well
Survivors deserve more than just medical care. They need personalized support, evidence-based tools, and a caring community that helps them live fully. Surviving cancer is a huge milestone. Living well after it is the next step.
Start with small changes. Walk more. Eat whole foods. Talk to your care team. And never be afraid to ask for help. Survivorship is not just about staying alive, it’s about feeling alive.
